iPad 2 and iOS5 Security flaw

I heard about this over the weekend, so I thought I would try it out to see how bad this is. First off this only affects the iPad 2 running iOS5. To test this out for your self you will need to have passcode set on your iPad and a Smart Cover case, which I am assuming is the majority of iPad 2 owners out there. Steps to reproduce this are

iPad applications won't open after upgrade to iOS5

So I left my iPad upgrading over night and on first impressions I though that everything was OK, that was until I tried to open some applications.

The apps that come with iOS, Calendar, Mail , Contacts etc all opened up fine but any application that I have downloaded/purchased would not open at all.  I had thought maybe I have not got the updates, so I down loaded all of the updates.  While they were updating I had a tweet from @aedney.

"@geekcomputers try downloading something new from the store and then try opening them again. I've had it forget my apple password before!"

This is what sent me down the right path.  When setting up iOS5 it asked me to enter my Apple ID which I did, I used is my Mobile Me account.  However this is not my iTunes account, as I have had this way before I started on the Mac platform.  When I tried to download a new application I saw that it had my Mobile me account.  Once all the updates had downloaded and synced then ALL my applications worked once more.  I then changed my Apple ID on the iPad to my iTunes store password.

If you need to change this on your iPad go to :

Settings -> Store

From there you can change your ID.  Everything is now as it should be.

iPad syncing issue unknown error occurred -39

Recently I started to have some problems syncing my iPad.  Whenever it got to the last phase of the syncing, the photos, when it would say deleting photos it would hang and I would get the error:

Unknown error occurred -39

Then it would stop, this was becoming very frustrating.   I thought there may be a problem with my iPhoto Library but all my photos seemed ok, they would sync to my apple tv and my iPhone.

I had read that I would need to go to the Photo's tab in iTunes untick the box to sync photos, let iTunes delete them from the device then add them back on.  At first I was thinking that I did not want to do this, as I sync all my photos on my iPad (just over 11,000) I know this would take HOURS to sync, so I thought I would try a couple of things first.

First I tried using Onyx to clear out all of my caches to see if there may of been a problem with the cache, this did not resolve the issue.  Next I tried to use some of the options available to you when you hold down Option+Command while clicking on the iPhoto icon.  This options I chose were:

This also did not resolve my issue, in the end I admitted defeat and carried out the original steps.  I went to the photos tab, removed the tick on the checkbox to not sync the photos.  After I clicked apply iTunes then deleted all the photos from the iPad.  Once complete, I placed a tick back into the box but this time just selected a few choice albums to sync over.

If anyone does know of a beter way to resolve this issue, then please feel free to get in touch.

Kindle app on the iPad

I have just synced my iPad and I saw that I had an update to the kindle application.  When looking at the details of the update, I was shocked to see that to comply with the "App Store" conditions they had to remove the button to go to the kindle store from within the application.

Now from what I understand you are not supposed to carry out in-app purchases, but the button before took you out of the application loaded safari and took you to the Kindle Store.  Now if you need to browse the kindle store you need to load Safari separately and navigate to the store via a bookmark or manually typing in the address, the link is (http://www.amazon.co.uk/kindlestore).

In my opinion it seems petty for Apple to make Amazon remove the button from the application, users are still going to use the kindle app to purchase books etc.  By forcing them to carry out this manual step, it just gives some people out there who don't like Apple, more reasons because of issues like this, to me it just seems like Apple are flexing their muscles in this case.

I will still use Kindle/Amazon as the range is books is far greater and in many cases cheaper than the iBooks store.

I would love to know your thoughts
