App Store showing updates, after updating

I have not had this happen for a while, but last night while syncing my iPad with my computer during the sync and the apps updating I loaded the App Store on my iPad.  My computer then stopped syncing saying my iPad updated, and then although it seemed that all the apps had updated, they App Store icon showed that there was one update.  OCD then kicked in as I don't like seeing the updates.  When I went into the App Store it said no update, but when you quit there was the 1 staring back at me.

I tried the steps I knew that has resolved this in the past, these were

• Quit all apps running then try loading the app and the app store - NOPE
• Reboot the iPad - NOPE
• Resync iPad with my computer - NOPE
• Go into Setting of the app store and toggle the switch for automatic updates, now the icon went away but I don't want to auto update my apps.  I left it for a minute toggled it once more and the dreaded 1 appeared again.

The only thing that worked for me in this situation was to delete and reinstall the app, this was not a major problem as its an app I don't really use anyway, but what if this was app that has lots of data, or a game which you can't get save data back with out restoring.

Do you know of any ways to remove the icon?, please add to the comments below
